1. What is qurban?

Qurban is the ritual slaughter of certain animals during Eid al-Adha to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah. It is a highly recommended sunnah (Sunnah Muakkadah) for those who can afford it.

2. Who is obligated to perform qurban?

Qurban is not obligatory, but it is highly recommended for every Muslim who is financially able (has enough wealth beyond their needs during the days of Eid). Normally those who are eligible to pay Zakat are obliged to offer qurban.

3. What animals can be sacrificed for qurban?

The animals allowed are:

  • Sheep or goats (1 animal per person)
  • Cows or buffalo (can be shared by up to 7 people)
  • Camels (can be shared by up to 7 people)

4. When should qurban be performed?

Qurban must be done after the Eid al-Adha prayer (10th of Zulhijjah) and within 3 days after that (up to the 13th of Zulhijjah, before sunset).

5. Can I do qurban on behalf of someone else?

Yes, you may perform qurban on behalf of another person, especially if they are deceased or unable to do it themselves—with their permission if they are alive.

6. Should I avoid cutting my nails and hair if I’m giving qurban?

It is recommended (according to many scholars) that the person who intends to offer qurban should not cut their hair or nails starting from the 1st of Zulhijjah until the animal is sacrificed.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“When the ten days (of Zulhijjah) start and one of you intends to offer a sacrifice, let him not cut his hair or nails until he has offered his sacrifice.” — (Sahih Muslim)

7. How is the Qurban meat distributed?

It is recommended to split Qurban meat equally into three parts. Following the sacrifice, one part is kept for yourself, one part is distributed to your family and friends, and one part is given to the poor and needy. However, many Muslims prefer to have their qurban performed It is recommended to split Qurban meat equally into three parts. 1. What is aqiqah?

Aqiqah is the Islamic tradition of sacrificing an animal upon the birth of a child. It expresses gratitude to Allah and is a sunnah muakkadah (strongly encouraged) practice.

2. When should aqiqah be performed?

The best time for aqiqah is on the 7th day after the child’s birth. If not possible, it can be done on the 14th, 21st, or any convenient time. But it can also be performed at any time after the 7th day if one is unable to do it earlier due to financial or other valid reasons.
